... having read Margaret Atwood's "The Labrador Fiasco"... I know that many a lost wilderness adventurer has resorted to eating the leather of their shoes to get by...
Not quite so desperate, after crossing the Gataga, the crew decided to have a sock roast! Lacking marshmallows, we thought we'd try toasting our soaked socks over the campfire.
Results? I recommend toasting the old school wool socks over the all synthetic or wool-synthetic mixes - the natural fibres brown up quite nicely but are still wearable if put too close to the fire and not set to flaming torches... the mixes 'crisp' up as the synthetic fibres melt and harden... and can be quite deceiving - they will look perfectly fine but are crunchy when you put them back on your feet...
and as for flavour.. it depends if you prefer a fluffy dessert, or one that's more like hard taffy... either way - difficult to digest with little protein. Perhaps a meal of boot leather isn't so bad... but only if your journey is done and you don't plan to be hiking anywhere! (see burnt boot quick fix!)
Bon appetit!
