NEWS ON THE BIG WILD

Friends in High Places

The winner of our summer contest is Meghan Ward – a climber with a sensational talent for story and an eye for the epic, as you can see from her winning photo entry below. We're hoping a $200 Gift Certificate to Mountain Equipment Co-op will help her out on her next climb! Thank you to everyone who submitted videos, photos, and stories that celebrate friendship in Canada's wilderness. Your experiences and stories are the fabric that weaves The Big Wild community together and inspires the fine folks at MEC and CPAWS.

Meghan Ward on High Elevation Friendship, as she so aptly puts it!

"We had perfect weather when we went to Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park. This was amazing for two reasons. First of all, my friend, who used to live in the mountains with me, was visiting from Ontario, and we wanted none other than to do some great hiking (and O'Hara is surely the place to do that!) Secondly, it was September in the Rockies and we had a perfect blue sky, sunshine and 25 degrees. It was unseasonably warm, and felt like summertime.

It was a special trip. In this photo, as we were hiking along I noticed our shadows on the rocks as we stood high on a ridge about Lake O'Hara on the All Souls portion of the Alpine Circuit. I snapped the picture on a whim, but looking at it afterwards, felt as though it looked like we were etched forever in that mountains mighty face, our shadows dyed into the rock like those ancient markings I find throughout the area. Alas, our markings disappeared as the sun went down, but the photo is timeless, and we will always remember that trip to O'Hara. Perhaps the mountains will too."
