We'd hired the cottage that stands in the ruins of Stogursey Castle in Somerset. We arrived in idyllic weather, sat outside in our garden surrounding by the castle walls and the moat, drinking wine in our deckchairs, watching the dog chase his frisbee around.
The following day was forecast wet in the monring, clearing up later. A great opportunity for a lie-in. But by lunchtime it was still coming down in stair-rods, so I tried to venture into the village to hunt down lunch. To my dismay, the footpath to our right had been washed away, the ford we'd crossed to reach the castle was overflowing and the road at the bottom of the track hd turned into a river, with plant-pots from nearby houses bobbing down it. I rang new hubby to come down and see - we were marooned in our castle on the hill!
Thankfully we were only stuck for a day and it did make our honeymoon very romantic, holed up in our cosy cottage. Thank heavens castles were built on hills.
