Cape Scott Rain

Cape Scott Rain

One of my favorite hikes is in Cape Scott Provincial Park on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. My husband and I have hiked it several times over the years. We were always blessed with good weather - often foggy or overcast but none of the drizzle or rain that the "wet coast" is known for.
In July, 2003 we headed out for our first "epic" as a family. Jer carried the gear and I carried our 4 month old son and his "gear" in the kid carrier back pack. It was a new pace for us... stopping for crying breaks or to nurse rather than pushing for distance. We camped overnight then headed to the light the next day (and little "G" had a great time trying to pet the lightkeeper's cat.) The trip was magic - so awesome to enjoy creation with our little one! We were so thankful for the good weather as we bedded down for our second night before heading home the next day.
It started raining in the night - the kind of rain that comes down sideways. Packing up was a total gong show - trying to keep gear dry is one thing but trying to keep a babe dry is another! We "packed" him last, and enclosed his backpack in my rain jacket so all you could see were little eyes and a nose. We hiked out as fast as possible and passed a couple of friends on the way, who wondered what we had done with our baby because it just looked like I was wearing a regular pack with a rainjacket over it!! "G" is now 6 and always up for adventure... and even has his own raingear now!
