Spem Reduxit: Honouring New Brunswick's 225th Anniversary
Epic Challenge
July 29, 2009 - August 3, 2009

Three men will take a newly-completed homebuilt Pacific Proa (outrigger canoe) up the mighty Saint John River for 6 days. Travelling from the province's largest city and former capitol [Saint John], to the current seat of government in Fredericton along the river that was the lifeblood of region for over five centuries, the trip will honour the 225th birthday of this great province and test not only the physical mettle of the participants, but also the fortitude of their developing skills as boatbuilders. Nothing means more to New Brunswick's heritage than shipbuilding, and to cruise along the 'Rhine of North America' in a vessel built right here is our way of showing that New Brunswick is not only proud of its past, but is looking toward a new sustainable future of self-propelled travel and a return to the river as a means of communication and transportation. In this way we will bring New Brunswick's motto - Spem Reduxit [Hope Restored] - to fruition once again and show that the future has never been brighter for our little province that has never, and will never, give up the good fight.

Distance [round-trip]: ~280-300 km

Time: 6 days and 5 nights

Food: All New Brunswick-grown produce and locally raised meat and poultry. In addition, the lower Saint John River has a unique sub-climate that allows for the natural growth of a number of nut trees unseen elsewhere in Eastern Canada. These will supplement our diet, as well as any foraged green found along the way such as duck potatoes and cattails.

Means of Propulsion: Paddling and possibly some use of a sail; no motor or fuel use of any kind from door-to-door.
