We are a group of kayak enthusiasts based in Vancouver, B.C. who are deeply concerned with the prospect of a pipeline connecting the Alberta Tar Sands with the B.C. coast, and an increase in tanker traffic in our coastal waters.
We are planning an expedition, beginning in late August of this year, in which we will paddle approximately 900km, from Vancouver to Kitimat. Our destination is significant because it is the proposed endpoint for the pipeline and will host new port facilities for tankers carrying crude oil and condensate. We are interested in exploring the social, political and economic aspects of the proposed pipeline project.
We have three main goals:
To Experience: We wish to experience the B.C. Coast by kayak, the issues behind pipeline development and tanker traffic, and the opinions and sentiments of those who would be affected by the Northern Gateway project.
To Connect: Bypaddling from Vancouver to Kitimat, we will create a physical connection between our urban environment, and the peoples and places along the coast of British Columbia. By raising awareness of the issues we will create a cognitive connection between the people and places along the way.
To Engage: We will engage the public and ourselves to understand and confront the issues at hand, and engage with the landscape of the B.C. Coast
