We went to the Nahanni to experience the landscape and the people of the area. Thirty years ago Nahanni National Park Reserve was created. The Park Reserve was created in the wake of proposals to dam Virigina Falls and protects Virginia Falls and a small sliver of the Nahanni watershed. In its inception the Park Reserve was intended for expansion. Finally the full Park is on the verge of creation, yet mineral interests threaten to erode proposed Park boundaries. The Dehcho Dene First Nation's territory includes the Southern Nahanni. The Dehcho Dene and Parks Canada support park expansion to include the entire watershed. We went to see what makes this area so special and meet the people invested in the area. Here is what we saw.
