A group of MEC staff from Vancouver are heading to Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park and surrounding area for a 5 day, 50km backpacking trip. The area is in the very SouthEastern corner of BC, and is bordered by Glacier National park to the south in Montana , and Waterton Lakes National park to the East in Alberta.
The area is a mountainous wildlife migration corridor (park of the Y2Y) and is home to one of the worlds highest concentrations of Grizzlies.
Recently, upriver mining and other economic interests have threatened the area.
The primary reason for our trip is to experience the ecosystem firsthand and raise awareness of some of the issues facing it. We believe that further governmental protection is needed in order to keep the area pristine.
