NEWS ON THE BIG WILD

CBC Covers the Peel Watershed

The Peel Watershed is the latest wilderness we're featuring on The Big Wild and, incidentally, the CBC North. Laurie Edward, community programs manager with Mountain Equipment Co-op, recently spoke on air about the importance of the Peel watershed and what it's protection would mean to paddler enthusiasts and Canadians across the country.

The Peel watershed is located in the Yukon Territory at the northern tip of the Yellowstone to Yukon conservation corridor. The watershed, including its five major tributaries, makes up the largest collection of wild mountain rivers in North America.

Below is the complete CBC interview between MEC's Laurie Edward and CBC's Rob Shannon-Fraser. Here's a snippet of what Laurie said to whet your appetite!

"We've been watching this area for a very long time The Peel petition has only been posted a couple of weeks. I know we've already had about one thousand people sign-on to the petition. As a member-owned co-operative, MEC is really responsible for stepping up on issues that matter to our members. It's important we do whatever we can to support the Yukon government in making the courageous decision to protect the peel. Many MEC members call the Yukon home."
