Save the Woodland Caribou

Save the Woodland Caribou
Ontario's woodland caribou are losing space to live, fast.  Ontario loses 35 000 square km’s of forest to industry every ten years - that's forest the woodland caribou once called home. To date, the caribou have already lost 50% of their range. Scientists paint a grim picture for their survival if industrial practices don't change.

Caribou and You

Help save Ontario's Woodland caribou and protect Canada's boreal forest.Honourable Linda Jeffrey is Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources – she's in charge of caribou and endangered species for the province. This is your opportunity to let her know Canadians care about their country's wild spaces.

By saving the woodland caribou’s habitat, we’re also keeping carbon stored in wetlands and intact forests. As a whole, Canada’s Boreal Forest covers nearly 6 million square km's of Canada, stretching from the Yukon across to Newfoundland like a protective green cloak.

The Ontario government released its Caribou Conservation Plan in 2009 – but it doesn't do enough to protect the woodland caribou in the part of Ontario called the commercial forest. The Big Wild wants the province to take a good, hard look at the science contained in the recent Federal report on critical habitat for Woodland caribou and strike a balance between industry and the environment.
